Dynamic Pricing — the price as a moving target

Reading time: 4 min

Prices change in real time based on demand, supply and context. Dynamic Pricing is powerful — and increasingly scrutinised by customers.

What it is

Dynamic Pricing continuously adjusts prices based on data points such as demand, inventory, competition, customer segment, channel or time. Steering typically runs through pricing engines with machine-learning modules.

How it works in practice

  • Aviation and hospitality: booking prices fluctuate minute by minute with capacity.
  • Mobility and ride-hailing: surge pricing in peak times or scarcity.
  • E-commerce: online retailers adjust prices based on competition and conversion data.

What customers gain

  • Lower prices during off-peak periods.
  • Immediately available terms without negotiation effort.
  • Incentive for planful, counter-cyclical booking.

What providers gain

  • Revenue optimisation across all utilisation and demand states.
  • Fast reaction to competition and market moves.
  • Data-based steering instead of gut decisions.

Where to be careful

  • Trust loss: frequent price jumps appear arbitrary to regular customers.
  • Algorithmic trap: models optimised only on historical data miss market breaks.
  • Regulation: personalised prices and surge mechanics face growing scrutiny (UCP, DSA).

When does the method fit?

Dynamic Pricing works for businesses with capacity binding, perishability or high demand elasticity. Prerequisites are clean data, clear governance and communicative comprehensibility. In transparent B2B relationships or with long-term contract partners, the method is hard to deploy.
